One of the best ways to customize and freshen up your scooter is by switching up its griptape. Keeping this updated is important for traction and grip which ultimately affects your ride.
In this blog, we’ll take you through how to change, apply, and clean griptape on a scooter. You can also refer to this short video which gives you a visual rundown on how to change griptape on a scooter properly. This video features the Envy Galaxy Grip Tape, which comes in at 6 x 23” to suit a wide range of deck sizes, on the Prodigy X Street Complete. This technique can be generally used on any scooter with our extensive range of griptape.
Note: You may need parental supervision for Step 5.
What you’ll need:
- New griptape
- Ruler
- Box cutter
- 2 x 5mm allen key (depending on your scooter, you may also need a 6mm allen key)
1. Remove existing wheel, brake, and griptape
Using your allen key, simply start by removing the rear wheel and brake. Peel off the existing griptape from your scooter.
2. Determine where to place new griptape
Figure out where you want to place your new griptape – this is where the larger size comes in handy as you can customise it to your liking. Take and note down measurements.
3. Prepare new griptape
Cut down your new griptape to your desired measurements (made in Step 2).
Clean the deck by wiping it down using a cloth or rag. You can use some general surface spray if there is any sticky residue leftover. Grab your new griptape and peel off the protective film.
4. Apply new griptape
Line up the griptape to the front of the deck and slowly place it down (be careful with this step as the adhesive will be very sticky). Gently remove any bubbles by using the palm of your hand. Starting from the middle of the deck, press down firmly and work your way outwards.
5. Cut & clean the edges
Grab your allen key and rough up the edges – this makes the edges easier to cut and gives you a clean finish. Carefully run a box cutter along the edges of the deck, using one smooth motion along each edge. This step can be a bit tricky so remember that practice makes perfect!
Note: you may need supervision from a parent or guardian for this step.
To get a nice clean finish, you can use the off cuts to file down the edges. This helps the shoes not catch on edges of griptape and also helps with general wear and tear.
6. Reinstall wheel and brake
Using the rear axel from your scooter or a blade, cut a hole in the griptape for the brake bolt. You can then reinstall the wheel and brake and you’re all set to roll with your newly installed griptape.
